    Carers Corner - April 2025

    From the Chair:
    Hello and welcome.
We have had a busy month attending meetings with partners and organisations helping carers navigate through the mind boggling Mental Health system. Carers often need to know where to go and how to approach or find a service, this is why we try to keep carers updated with the many changes to the carer space, this is important and always ongoing.
It is sad and very unfortunate to hear that Swan hill will not be getting their Mental Health and Wellbeing Centre anytime soon due to lack of government funding, however, Mallee Family Care are doing all they can to fill the gap also Partners in Wellbeing their services are free and offer one-on-one support even for small  businesses.  .
With the cooler months approaching we look forward to a lovely autumn although up here in the Mallee we could do with some of the rain Queensland is getting (only not as severe).
Farmers often have hard decisions to make when the weather is so unpredictable, sowing crops are held up because of the weather, so the decision to sow or not to sow is a hard pill to swallow, this alone places a lot of pressure onto the families so we at LMMHCN need to make sure that the Carers in our communities have all the information and support needed to keep their loved ones healthy during trying times. Let’s hope we have a break in the weather with nice steady rain to bring a smile to our wonderful farmers.
Best Wishes for a Happy Easter.
    Andrea Smith
    Chair.

From Kate - LMMHCN Mildura representative
On 27 February 2025, Victoria’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Commissioners Annabel Brebner and Maggie Toko visited Mildura’s new Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect. I was honoured to be in attendance and delighted to speak with the Commissioners about the longstanding challenges we face in our region and the life-changing impact of this new service.
Delivering on a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, these services are the first of their kind in Australia, supporting the mental health and quality of life of caregivers. Recognising that carers are often unable to work  have adequate support, the centres offer a welcoming and accessible space, available without need for a referral – giving those with care responsibilities access to a range of services, including information, networks, resources and hardship funds.
The Mildura Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect is delivered by Mallee Family Care, in partnership with Mind Australia offering a welcoming co-designed centre. All staff has lived experience, so they understand the unique challenges and complexities that come with caring for someone with mental health challenges, illness, psychological distress or addiction. Having met every member of the small Mildura team, I can honestly say "they get it"!
The centre can be accessed in-person via walk-in (no appointment required) at 122 Ninth Street Mildura, or via phone 1800 979 730 and online booking for tailored support. Support is free, and you do not need a referral or Medicare card.
Best wishes and Happy Easter to all.
    Kate

There have been some improvements made to the eligibility re-assessment process by introducing new eligibility re-assessment letters and a fact sheet which outine more detail about the types of information you may wish to provide. The latest NDIS data is also now live and is packed with key insights on participants, plans and providers. You can find more information about eligibility re-assessments, including the new fact sheet, on the NDIS website or call 1800 800 100.
New rules for plan management and plan information and plan changes.
From 4th March new rules have started to make NDIS plan decisions clearer and fairer. These changes help ensure your plan works for you and your needs. There are now clearer rules for them to decide if there is an unreasonable risk with how your funding is being managed and clearer processes for making changes to a plan, these new rules clarify when and how they can vary or reassess a participants plan..

Your Recipe for April :  Beef and Mushroom Cobbler
    Ingredients:
    • 1.5kg Beef Chuck Steak, cut into 3cm pieces
    • 2 tbsp olive oil

    • 1 cup (250ml) dry white wine

    • 3 cups (750ml) salt-reduced beef stock
    • 400g Swiss brown mushrooms, thickly sliced
    • 3 shallots, sliced

    • 4 garlic cloves, chopped

    • 5g fresh thyme sprigs, tied with kitchen string
    • Scone topping
    • 1 1/2 cups (225g) plain flour
    • 1 tbsp baking powder
    • 1 tsp caster sugar
    • 1 tsp sea salt flakes
    • 75g shredded gruyère or cheddar
    • 1 1/3 cups (330ml) chilled thickened cream, plus extra, to brush
    Method:
    • Preheat oven to 150C (130C fan-forced
). Heat a 16-cup (4L) flameproof casserole dish over high heat. Season beef with salt and pepper. Add oil to dish. Working in batches, add enough beef to cover bottom of dish without crowding. Cook, turning occasionally, for 5 mins or until browned. Use a slotted spoon to transfer beef to a bowl. Repeat with remaining beef.
    • Return beef to dish with wine, stirring to scrape up any browned bits on bottom of dish. Add stock, mushrooms, shallots, garlic and thyme to the dish. Bring to a simmer.
    • Cover and place in oven.
    • Bake for 2 hours. Uncover and bake for a further 30 mins or until beef is tender and liquid has reduced slightly.
    • Increase oven temperature to 220C (200C fan-forced). To make the scones, mix the flour, baking powder, sugar and sea salt flakes in a large bowl. Mix in the cheese. Add the cream and gently stir just until a moist dough forms.
    • Remove the beef mixture from oven. Roll the dough into 12 equal-sized balls and arrange over the beef mixture, spacing them evenly and pressing to flatten slightly. Brush lightly with extra cream.
    • Return dish to oven and bake for 25-30 mins or until the scones are dark golden brown on top and the filling bubbles. Set aside for 5 mins to cool before serving.

    From the Chair:
Hello and welcome to our March edition, I hope the extreme summer heat is past us and we can look forward to the beauty of Autumn and some less hot days.

Last month LMMHCN CoM had its first meeting for 2025 settingout our goals and re visiting on-going challenges. One request is for clarity around a housing issue at Haven/Mind Australia’s, Arnold Street, Bendigo site, that appears to be unsuitable for consumers long term housing,  we are hopeful in  getting some satisfactory answers..
Our continued association with Tandem enables us to keep you updated on important issues and promote their new programs.
New Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect centres are opening up and we will keep you up to date with their locations as information comes to hand.
Have you started back with your Carer Group? Many a fine tale can be told over a cuppa while meeting new carer friends.
A list of Carer Support Groups in our region can be found in this newsletter along with contact details to help you with support and resources in your carer role.
If you have any stories/photo’s you would like to share with our readers about the fun (or not so fun) times experienced with your carers group, we would love to hear from you, please send to:
    Until next time
    Andrea Smith
    Chair.

    Congratulations LMMHCN:
March is LMMHCN Birthday month so I want to share a little bit about where it all started.
Fifteen years ago, Bendigo Health Carer Support Services (Mental Health Respite Program) (BHCSS) and Northern Mallee Mental Health Family and Carer Resource Services (NMFC) partnered to support carers within the Loddon Mallee region to establish their own regional voice. The worker-supported and led model brought together carer representatives from locally based carer support groups in each of the ten government areas, meeting on a quarterly basis so that they could have a collective voice for matters that affect carers of people with mental health issues.
Both organisations assisted with administration support, meeting organisation, publicity, information dissemination via emails, website and mail-outs, funded accommodation and travel costs for carers to attend meetings, carer consultation and forums.
Original funding (including website developement) was provided by BHCSS and Mallee Family Care (MH carer resource services). Funding uncertainty in 2015 compelled BHCSS to initiate a targeted review to provide the LMMHCN with a future direction for a sustainable, inclusive network. The reviews broad principle was to establish strategic aims, membership eligibility and how to increase mental health carer participation in a continuing network and be visible to all stakeholders and regional community in general.
Fast forward to 2015: Kerry Meiers (BHCSS) set up the inaugural LMMHCN Committee of Management (CoM); 2016 LMMHCN moved to incorporation of the organisation and shifted to a strictly, independent and collective mental health carer voice for the Loddon Mallee region. The independent LMMHCN was officially launched in 2016.
CoM are very grateful for the ongoing support Bendigo Health CSS provided for funding our operating expenses along with Murray PHN who made a significant grant to the network which supported us to follow through on the recommendations of the Carer Consultation Report 2016 and The Perspectives of Carers on Housing Needs and Mental Illness Housing 2016. CoM hosted its inaugural AGM in August 2017 and printed the very first Annual Report 2016/17
Congratulations and thank you to all the Champions who have been involved with the Loddon Mallee Mental Health Carers Network over the past 15 years.

    60g Butter (chopped)
    2tspn Lemon rind (finely grated)
    3 Egg yolks
    Pastry -
1& 2/3 Cups Plain flour (plus extra for kneading)
    180g Butter (chilled & chopped)
    2tbsp Iced water
    Meringue-
    3 Egg whites
    3/4 Cup caster sugar
    1 Tblsp Lemon juice
    Step 1
    Make Lemon curd:
Place sugar and cornflour in a small heavy-based saucepan over medium heat.
Gradually stir in lemon juice and 1 cup water until combined.
Stir over heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until sugar dissolves. Increase heat to high.
Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until mixture bubbles and thickens.
Reduce heat to low. Simmer for 1 minute.
Remove from heat. Stir in butter, lemon rind and egg yolks until combined.
    Pour into a shallow dish.
Cover surface with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours or until cold.
    Step 2
    Meanwhile, make Pastry:
    Grease a 20cm x 30cm lamington pan.
Line base and sides with baking paper, extending paper 5cm above edges of pan.
Place flour and butter in a food processor. Process until fine crumbs form. With motor running, add iced water.
Process until pastry comes together, adding an extra 1 tablespoon iced water, if needed. Shape pastry into a disc.
    Wrap in plastic wrap.
    Refrigerate for 15 minutes.
Place pastry on a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll out to a 28cm x 40cm rectangle.
Line prepared pan with pastry. Trim edge. Prick base with a fork.
    Refrigerate for 40 minutes.
    Step 3
    Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced.
Place pan on a baking tray.
    Line pastry with baking paper.
Fill with baking weights or uncooked rice.
    Blind-bake for 15 minutes.
Remove paper and weights or rice.
Bake for a further 15 to 18 minutes or until golden.
Place pan on a wire rack to cool.
    Step 4
    Make Meringue:
Using an electric mixer, beat egg whites, sugar and lemon juice for 5 minutes or until mixture is thick and glossy, and sugar has dissolved.
    Step 5
    Increase oven to 220C/200C fan-forced.
Carefully move oven rack to highest shelf.
Spoon lemon curd into pastry case. Level surface with a spatula.
Transfer slice to a serving plate.
Spoon meringue into a piping bag fitted with a 1cm nozzle.
    Pipe meringue onto lemon curd.
Bake on top shelf of oven for 3 to 4 minutes or until meringue starts to turn golden in colour.
    Cool completely.
    Cut into 24 pieces. Serve.

    Carers Corner - February 2025

    From the Chair:

Hello everyone, and welcome to a New Year.

We hope you all managed to have some well-earned rest and enjoyed your holiday break.
Many of us tend to make New Year resolutions on 1st January, usually I have lost momentum by 2nd, 3rd or 4th January, but this year I am determined to do better and try to keep to my New Year resolutions.

One resolution is LMMHCN ensure carers are able to access information and services according to their need, the services that can be beneficial for their health and wellbeing, as well as financial direction, especially new carers to our site, so if you know of someone who could benefit from reading our Carers Corner newsletter please invite them to subscribe or to check us out on Facebook or the website.
Carers Corner is a space for us to share insights from across the mental health sector and carer support organisations and give life to improved outcomes for carers in the Loddon Mallee Region, as a subscriber you are informed of carer specific events held in the region, we list the contact details for carer support groups including those led by some of our committee members and regional carer support services who offer updates about their carer groups and  carer specific events.
This New Year will see our committee working to make sure that the progress on the findings put forward in the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health Services report are still on track and make sure we bring to you any changes that apply to all caring situations.

Keeping up with the housing issue is another area we will be monitoring very closely, supported housing for people living with mental health issues affects many; especially those living in the small towns scattered throughout the Loddon Mallee Region who are not only crying out for suitable housing but the need for support services to extend outreach services and programs to these communities; we understand the difficulty support providers are facing in recruiting enough employees but we hope this will all change in 2025.
I am looking forward to another year working together to achieve what matters most to carers and the people they are caring for who are living with mental health issues.

Our 2023/24 Annual Report is now available to read/download on our website https://www.lmmhcn.org.au

Launch of the National Carer Strategy:
The National Carer Strategy 2024 - 2034 was released in December 2024 by the Hon. Amanda Rishworth MP. The strategy outlines a framework to shape how the Australian Government will work with relevant government agencies, carers and the carer support sector to address what is needed in order to better support carers, now and into the future. The strategy recognises the important role of carers and outlines priority areas where efforts will be directed to support positive change and ensure carers can better balance the caring role with all aspects of their lives.
This recognises the need for services provided accross the Commonwealth, States and Territories to be easier to navigate and better targeted to provide the right support for carers at the right time and right place.
This is a positive step towards improving awareness of carers, their roles, the impacts of supporting others and availability of carer supports and services.
You can download a copy at http://dss.gov.au/supporting-carers/national-carer-strategy

The Australian Government is investing a further $448.3 million into mental health and wellbeing alongside $1.1 Billion to support design and implementation of Foundational Supports and reforms of the NDIS. A particular highlight of these announcements is the inclusion of psychosocial support services, providing $272.1 million over two years from 2025-26 to ensure continuity of services for the Australian community.
Mental Health Australia CEO, Ms Carolyn Nikoloski said, " the impact and commitment is significant - it means people who access supports through the Commonwealth Psychosocial Support Program, their families, carers and supporters have some reassurances that these critical services will continue beyond June 2025."

    National Stigma Report Card:
The National Stigma Report Card found that 70% of people with complex mental health issues had still faced stigma in the last 12 months. On average, 72% of participants said the stigma they had experienced had discouraged them from socialising, making new friends or dating people.
For many Australians who have complex mental health issues, it is not just the illness that can get in the way of engaging with work and friends. Getting in the way are television shows and news reports which reinforce steriotypes of criminality and violence.
From Sane Australia: "There is evidence economic crisis increases stigma faced by peope with complex mental health issues; as a result, some people were reluctant to engage in work and social activities, while others felt so uncomfortable, they were too scared to seek help."
This research shows just how much of an impact stigma and discrimination has on peoples lives. It comes through quite clearly that people want to be treated with kindness and compassion and respect.
"I don't think it is too much to ask of the community, clearly, more education, understanding and acceptance is needed. During COVID-19, people complained about being isolated, imagine how people with mental health issues feel every day". Liz H.

    NDIS Extension Plans:
If NDIS haven't completed a plan reassessment with you before your plan expires, they will automatically extend your plan for the same duration as your current plan, or up to 12 months.
A plan auto-extension means that instead of getting a new plan, your current plan will continue. they will adjust the total value of your previous plan in line with annual indexation and will notify you advising your plan has been auto-extended or if your preferred method of contact is the 'MY NDIS' participant portal and App, you will receive a digital notification when your plan has been auto-extended.
If you haven't heard from them and have been waiting to request changes to your plan, call on 1800 800 110

    • 125g butter, softened
    • 3/4 cup (165g) brown sugar
    • 2  Eggs
    • 1 cup (250ml) mashed banana (about 2 large overripe bananas)
    • 2 cups (300g) self-raising flour
    • 1/2 cup (120g) sour cream
    • Crushed pretzels, to serve (optional)

    • 2 tbsp thickened cream
    • 2/3 cup (110g) icing sugar mixture
    Method:
    • Step 1
Preheat oven to 180C. Grease and line the base and 2 long sides of a 10cm x 22cm (base measurement) loaf pan with baking paper.
    • Step 2
Beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the banana and beat until just combined. Add the flour and sour cream and stir to combine. Spoon into the prepared pan and smooth the surface.
    • Step 3

Add the icing sugar and stir to combine. Set frosting aside for 30 mins or until cooled completely and frosting has a spreadable consistency.

    Carers Corner - December 2024

LMMHCN Committee of Management may be winding down for 2024 but our work will continue into 2025 advocating for carers and their loved ones, especially the hidden carers who live in the smaller communities of our region.

LMMHCN Committee of Management look forward to improve access for carer support services in the Loddon Mallee region. There are so many carers and their loved ones who miss out on support due to the distance they must travel to major towns to receive the support they need, lack of public transport and/or lack of knowledge that there is help out there is also a concern for us. We understand that outreach is not always available for a lot of towns due to lack of staff; so there needs to be an incentive to recruit more carer support workers throughout the Loddon Mallee Region.
LMMHCN will also continue advocating for supportive housing for people living with mental health issues.
If you are needing help with your caring role, please reach out, a list of local carer groups and support services are listed below.
Also below is a special Christmas recipe for a delicious Tirimasu Cheesecake, I hope you have time to make it because it is sooo nice.
We hope you all have a safe and joyful festive season and look forward to connecting with you with our next edition of Carers Corner in February 2025.
    Until next year,
Take care everyone and stay safe.
     LMMHCN CoM

Recipe for December - Tirisimu Cheese Cake
    Ingredients (12)
    200g plain chocolate biscuits
    80g butter, melted
    1 tbsp. gelatine powder
25g (1/4 cup) instant coffee granules
375g cream cheese, at room temperature
    165g (3/4 cup) caster sugar
    2 tsp vanilla extract
    300mls thickened cream, whipped
    250g mascarpone cheese
    250ml (1 cup) warm water
    10 sponge finger biscuits
    Cocoa powder, to dust
    Method
Step 1 Grease and line a 20cm (base measurement) spring form pan with baking paper. Process the chocolate biscuits in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Transfer to a bowl. Add the melted butter. Stir until well combined. Use your fingertips to press into the base of the prepared pan. Place in the fridge until required.
Step 2 Meanwhile, place 80ml (1/3 cup) water in a small heatproof bowl. Sprinkle with the gelatine and 1 tablespoon of the coffee granules and stir until well combined. Place the bowl inside a larger heatproof bowl. Pour boiling water into the larger bowl until it reaches halfway up the side of the smaller bowl. Set aside, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until the gelatine dissolves.
Step 3 Use electric beaters to beat the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla together until smooth. Add the cream and beat until combined and thickened. Gradually add the gelatine mixture and beat until just combined. Add the mascarpone and beat until just combined.
Step 4 Place the warm water in a bowl. Stir in the remaining coffee granules until dissolved. Spoon 1/3 of the cream cheese mixture over the biscuit base. Dip the savoiardi biscuits in the coffee mixture for 2 to 3 seconds. Arrange biscuits over the cream cheese layer. Top with half of the remaining cream cheese mixture. Place in the fridge.
Step 5 Place the remaining cream cheese mixture in the fridge for 30 minutes or until just firm enough to pipe. Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a 2cm plain nozzle. Pipe over the cake. Chill in the fridge overnight or until set.
Step 6 Transfer cheesecake to a serving plate. Dust with cocoa powder to serve.
    Bon Appetite

    GUNBOWER CREEK - COHUNA

    From the Chair:

    Hello Everyone and Welcome,
We thank you for your patience while we navigated through a few hiccups recently but are now pleased to welcome back on board our very valuable Liz, editor of our Carers Corner.
Carers are very special persons, who have to work their way through many areas in one day, we are constantly changing from one duty to another, this is very trying and so we as a committee recognise this and encourage our carers and committee members to take a break some times to take time to regroup or re-set.   This is especially important as we wind down toward the end of the year and into the very busy time of Christmas, we must all remember to take care of you!
We have once again met for our annual AGM and I am pleased to advise all positions have been filled and our committee is all set and ready to tackle another year.  I would like to thank all those members who put up their hands to fill the CoM positions and thank them for once again entrusting me with the job of Chair for another twelve months.
We have a very enthusiastic group of committee members and I look forward to working with them all to continue our work on the housing issue and to make sure all carers are heard and we deliver a voice for them.
Please make sure you contact us if you have anything that you feel needs to be addressed - we are only too happy to listen and help where we can.
I thank our Deputy Chair Liz who is also our wonderful scribe and look forward to another year of very interesting Carers Corner.
    Until next time,

    Andrea
    Chair LMMHCN

    News from  - Wycheproof:

The Wycheproof Drop- In- Centre, not only caters for carers but it is also caters for children, the children’s club is called ‘Bright Sparks’, a club where children (including children with special needs) can come in after school have afternoon tea, play games, electronic and indoor/outside games.
The Bright Sparks Club meet every Tuesday (except Public Holidays), and has been very successful with not only the students but also the parents as it gives them a couple of hours of free time after school – a little extra respite.
    Halloween:
Being a small town, 'trick or treat' is not really an event celebrated so the Drop In Centre held a special Halloween afternoon where the children decorated biscuits into spooky spiders and played games of guess the Ooze under the cloth - Peanut butter, Vegemite and slime being the most guessed, the good old carrot stick missed out, of course a bag of lollies accompanied each member home and a good time was had by all.

    Being Believed  -  Being Heard:
Victoria Legal Aid and the Independent Mental Health Advocacy service (IMHA) will be hosting an event on Thursday 21st November, 2 pm to 3.30 pm to release a new report, 'Being Believed -  Being Heard' – Stories of compulsory mental health treatment in Victoria.
    Event details:
The event will be held online and will include an opening address by the Minister for Mental Health, the Hon. Ingrid Stitt MP, followed by a panel discussion.
A Zoom link will be circulated prior to the event.
RSVP by 5pm Monday 18th November
You can also submit questions to be considered by the panel.
    About the report:
The Being Believed - Being Heard –The  Stories of compulsory mental health treatment in Victoria report is the result of a five-month project and tells the stories of 16 lived experience experts who have been subject to compulsory mental health treatment in Victoria.
The stories and the report were delivered as part of the review of compulsory treatment criteria and alignment of decision-making laws. It is also intended to amplify consumer voices in informing broader mental health and wellbeing systems reform and culture change.
The report highlights the key themes and solutions identified by the lived experience experts, including the lasting impacts of compulsory treatment, the challenges to accessing supports and services consumers want and need, as well as the barriers to the effective use of supported decision-making mechanisms.
Through this event, they will reflect on the stories and solutions outlined to consider the role of consumer leadership in mental health reform, and how ongoing systems reform can further strengthen supported decision-making in Victoria’s mental health and wellbeing system.

    Changes to NDIS Sign-in Options

Starting 18 October 2024, participants and nominees won’t be able to use secret question and answers to verify their identity when logging into NDIS systems. This is because they are linking their systems to myGov accounts.
From 18 October, participants and nominees must use alternative myGov sign-in options, like pass-keys, SMS codes or using the myGov code generator app.
Those who haven’t updated their sign-in options won’t be able to access the NDIS portal or app until they do.
The myGov sign in options are more secure than secret questions and answers.
More information and instructions on how to update sign in options are available on NDIS website: https://www.ndis.gov.au
If you need help you can also call the National Contact Centre on 1800 800 110 or contact myGov

    Media news:
Supporting the Wellbeing of Families and Carers in Bendigo:
The Victorian Government is giving local families and carers of people experiencing mental health challenges the support they deserve – with a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect centre in Bendigo now officially open.
Minister for Mental Health Ingrid Stitt and Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards visited the Loddon Mallee Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect centre – a warm and welcoming space that provides locals with the vital networks and support they need to continue caring for their loved one, while also looking after their own wellbeing.
Delivering on a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health Systemthe network of eight centres are the first of their kind in Australia, supporting the mental health and quality of life of caregivers when supporting someone with mental health challenges, illness, psychological distress or addiction.
There are currently more than 60,000 Victorians providing mental health care to family and loved ones, often a long-term responsibility that is unpaid and without adequate support.
Recognising these challenges that caregivers often face, the centre offers a welcoming and accessible space, available for walk-ins and without need for a referral – giving those with care responsibilities access to a range of services, including information, networks, resources and hardship funds.
Staff at the Loddon Mallee Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect have their own lived experience of supporting someone with mental health or substance use challenges and understand the needs and circumstances of people who come for support.
The centre is operated by Mind Australia as the lead provider, in collaboration with Mallee Family Care as the secondary partner organisation.

    National Carer Strategy:

2,684 Victorian carers took part in the 2024 National Carer Survey – considerably more responses than the last survey conducted in 2022. Having your voices heard is a vital element in our advocacy for improved carer policy and outcomes.

The 2024 National Carer Survey brings a detailed focus on carer recognition and inclusion for carers accessing service systems.

The data released shows that carers are significantly impacted by financial stress, poorer mental health and wellbeing, and high levels of social isolation.

Initial analysis reveals the following major themes for Victorian carers:

    • Financial stress - 62% reported financial stress (up 6%) and 22% reported financial distress* (up 8%).
    • Mental health and wellbeing of carers - 45% reported their wellbeing was either low or very low.
    • Social isolation - 52% reported high levels of isolation.
    • Lack of recognition - 60% reported they did not believe their caring role was recognised or valued by the government and 49% felt it wasn’t recognised by the community.

A short fact sheet of initial results for each state and territory, as well as nationally, was published during National Carers Week, and can be viewed here: https://www.carersnsw.org.au/about-us/our-research/carer-survey

The full report will be released in March 2025.

*Financial stress means difficulty meeting basic financial needs and commitments, such as housing and food. Financial distress is defined as four or more experiences of financial stress in the previous 12 months.

    Carers Corner - October 2024

A beautiful display of Cherry Blossom

Hello and welcome to our October edition of Carers Corner.
Sometimes the personal life and wellbeing of a carer needs to take precedence over a volunteering role. August and September was that time when my duties of scribing our monthly newsletter had to be put on hold. I hope our members and subscribers understand and enjoy this month's edition.
Although Spring has sprung, one would say Winter has decided to stick around for awhile. Thank goodness we are able to at least enjoy the magnificant displays of blossoms and wattles everywhere which are looking stunning and if we're lucky we may get to feel a touch of warmth in the rare bouts of sunshine.
In this issue I touch base on the importance of carer Wellbeing Centres for carers to connect with when a bit of support and understanding is needed in day-to-day movements.
Also, October is Mental Health month and also National Carers Week falls on Sunday 13th to Saturday19th October, there will be many special events happening around the region. This year the theme for Carers Week is, 'CARE FOR THE CARER', and is fundamentally a chance to recognise and celebrate carers, to understand and encourage people across Victoria to check in and connect with a carer you know and to be aware that sometimes, being in a care relationship can leave people feeling socially isolated.

"LMMHCN extend a huge Congratulations to Tandems 30th anniversary":

Have your say - Fundamental Supports:
Governments are working together to design and deliver additional supports in the community. These additional supports are called Foundational Supports.
Consultaion period - 2nd September to 12.00am,30th November 2024. These are specific supports that would be available outside the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to help people with disability, and their families and carers. Many people with disability are noton the NDIS. Some of these people, who are not onthe NDIS, may need more help than what is offered through mainstream or community services, like early childhood education, schools and community mental health. This is where additional Foundational Supports can assist. Your support is needed to ensure supports that meet the needs of people with disability work.
Commonwealth and State and Territory governments are working on this together. Importantly, people with disability and mental health concerns will be at the centre of this work. So will their families and carers, and the wider community.
Consultations are nation-wide and will involve in-person and online events.

    Message from our Chair:
Hello and welcome to the July edition of Carers Corner, we hope you are all staying warm and well connected.

This year is passing so quickly and this edition will mark the beginning of the second half of the year where we are facing more chilly days with very little sunshine to brighten the day. Here in the Mallee we are very happy to have had some rain so the crops can germinate and start this year’s program, but the fog and frost we can do without.

Over the past few years, we at LMMHCN have been investigating the different housing issues around people living with mental health challenges especially for those who are not NDIS recipients. It is a mammoth task to come up with solutions when there are so many different requirements and programs put forward by government agencies and when so many people are facing the uncertainty of rental accommodation which makes our advocating even harder, but we will continue to work on this very much needed issue for all those loved ones who desperately want to live independently and secure a place they can call home.
Whilst we have been working closely with one agency and feel we are making some in-roads, financing and getting our parliamentary members on board is the biggest challenge yet to climb.
If any of our readers have any ideas of what you would like to see as a solution for your loved ones, we would love to hear from you, whether you have had a positive outcome and found suitable accommodation or you can see a solution in supported accommodation with or without NDIS support

Until next time stay warm and safe.
    Andrea

Congratulations to 'The Maine Connection' - Castlemaine
The Maine Connection recently celebrated 20 years of peer-led support and connection.
This is a massive achievement for one of Victoria's oldest consumer-developed and consumer-controlled groups. The Maine Connection is an inclusive volunteer consumer community and is inclusive of people, ideas, therapies and beliefs, and welcomes any community member who is supportive of its aims and maintains that all people are best capable of mapping their own path to recovery, and that the inevitable detours are sometimes helpful learning experiences, it seeks to support people in their recovery, in the way they choose.

I have included the links again for the 2024 NationaCarers Survey, simply because it is such an important survey. If we carers don't share our voice in this comprehensive survey the higher powers will not learn:'how the carer population is changing, what's important tocarers and whocarers are'. (If we don't speak up, we can't expect change)The results of this survey are one of the most important data sets Carers Australia has to demonstrate so as State and Territory carer organisations get a better understanding of carers wants and needs, and inform research, advocacy, and service design for carers across Australia.

Participants can also enter a draw to win one of 24 gift vouchers valued at $200 (3 vouchers per State/Territory)
You can either fill it in online or Carers Australia can send you a printed questionaire including a reply paid envelope. Call: 02 9280 4744  Or Email:

Media release, Courtesy of MIND Australia - 12th June 2024
New research funded by MIND Australia has found emergency departments and NDIS providers need to upskill and work collaboratively to better support people experiencing mental health challenges when they present to emergency departments. Heather McIntyre is the inaugural recipient of a MIND funded PHD scholarship delivered in partnership with the University of South Australia. Her research found NDIS participants often received inadequate care with emergency departments and they are discharged without proper treatment due to a major disconnect with the NDIS. Emergency Departments and NDIS providers must aquire further skills and service capacitiies to provide supportive, overlapping care and decrease distress for people with psychosocial disabilities. Emergency Departments need to learn how to build trust, how to really listen and provide safe, low-sensory environments.

    • 300g (2 cups) self-raising flour
    • 160ml (2/3 cup) milk
    • Whipped cream, to serve
    • PASSIONFRUIT CUSTARD
    • 500ml (2 cups) milk
    • 100g (1/2 cup) caster sugar
    • 35g (1/4 cup) cornflour
    • 3 egg yolks
    • 2 tbsp passionfruit pulp
    • 140g (1/2 cup) bought passionfruit curd
    • PASSIONFRUIT ICING
    • 150g (1 cup) icing sugar
    • 2-3 tbsp passionfruit pulp
    Method
Step 1. To make the custard, heat the 500ml milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat until simmering. Meanwhile, whisk the 100g caster sugar35g cornflour and 3 egg yolks in a bowl until smooth.
Step 2. Whisk the warm 160ml milk into the sugar mixture. Pour the mixture into the pan. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens. Transfer to a bowl. Stir in 2 tbsp passionfruit pulp and 140g bought passionfruit curd until well combined. Set aside, stirring occasionally, until cooled.
Step 3. Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan forced. Lightly grease a 22cm round springform pan and line the base and side with baking paper, extending the paper 4cm over the top.
Step 4. Use electric beaters to beat the 225g butter, at room temperature150g caster sugar and 2 tsp vanilla extract in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the 3 eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the 300g self-raising flour and 160ml milk, in alternating batches, until well combined.
Step 5.Spoon half of the cake mixture into the prepared pan. Use the back of a spoon to smooth the surface. Spoon the cooled custard over the top and smooth the surface. Top with dollops of remaining cake mixture. Smooth the surface.
Step 6. Bake, covering loosely with foil if the cake browns too quickly, for 1 hour 15-20 minutes or until firm to the touch. Set aside in the tin to cool completely.
Step 7. To make the icing, combine the 150g icing sugar and enough of the 2-3 tbsp passionfruit pulp in a bowl to form a drizzling icing consistency. Spread icing over the cake, letting it drip down the side. Serve warm or at room temperature, with whipped cream and enjoy.

Mt. Cole - Autumn at its finest.
    A message from the Chair:

    Hello Everyone,
Welcome to another edition of Carers Corner, I thought I would share something on a personal note that brought me so much joy recently.
Now that the weather is getting colder I thought it would be a good time to clean out my cupboard. I know it’s probably the wrong time of the year to be spring cleaning but for me it’s a job that was past due. It turned out to be a perfect time because I found all the old board games tucked away in the back of the cupboard; it brought back so many wonderful memories of when we would sit around the table and enjoy playing a board game, low and behold even UNO made a come-back so we sat and played this grand old favourite. The message I'm trying to convey here is, that a simple thing like playing boards games can bring you so much enjoyment which in turn can aid in your health and wellbeing and change your mood for the better, it certainly beats staring at the TV. I hope you can find time to have an evening of old fashioned fun with your family favourites.
On the business end, the LMMHCN Committee held its meeting recently and once again it brought forth a number of issues that some of our regions carers are experiencing, we will endeavour to challenge those issues and hopefully change them to a positive outcome.
We are always happy to hear from you about any issues you may encounter.
Until next time take care and stay warm.
    Thank you
    Andrea
    Chair LMMHCN

Introducing Kate, LMMHCN representative for Mildura, this is Kates story:
Hi I’m Kate, one of the newer members of the wonderful LMMHCN Committee of Management. I’ve been asked to share a little bit about myself so here goes…
My journey as a mental health carer started 11 years ago when a family member experienced his first major psychotic episode. At the time, we were living in a rural community with a population of less than 400. When 3 police cars converge on your home in a small country town, everybody notices and gossip runs rife! Thankfully, our local policeman was extraordinarily kind and competent.
After being carted off in a divvy van that day, my family member spent much of the next decade ‘cycling’ in and out of mental health services on compulsory treatment orders. I’m a trauma survivor with my own history of mental illness so, at times, the stress caused me to become unwell. I was in hospital when I first heard about mental health carer support services. Talking to others with lived experience and reading Carers Corner for the first time helped me feel less alone. I don’t have many positive things to say about that decade of my life but, by sharing my experiences, I’m proud to have contributed in a small way to the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System. I was so pleased with the final recommendations delivered in 2021. The reform process is painfully slow but we are seeing positive change.
My family member now lives with me in Mildura, far away from his old life and negative experiences. With effective medication, stable accommodation, and NDIS support he’s rebuilding his life. I’ve become involved in the co-design process for our local family and carer-led service operated by Mallee Family Care in partnership with Mind Australia. Life isn’t perfect but it is so much better than it was. As the Mildura representative for LMMHCN, I’d like to make contact with as many local mental health carers as I can. Please contact me on 0438162751 for a confidential chat.
    Kate

Government Revised Condition to the Carer Payment:
It was very pleasing to learn of the government's decision to remove barriers to employment for the nations unpaid carers. Carers have been constantly voicing their distaste around the rules for work and the Carers Payment and how these rules have contributed to ongoing disadvantage. The government's announcement to relax the rules and allow more flexibility in the hours carers work, study or volunteer over a four week period, is a significant step towards mitigating the disadvantaged. These changes will allow carers to work more flexibly and progress their studies while keeping their Carers Payment. Under the proposed changes, Carers Payment recipients will be able to work 100 hours over a four week period rather than the 25 hour week current limit. This is going to provide greater flexibility to structure their work committments around their caring role before losing their payment, and accomodates unpredictable and fluctuating care, additionally, travel time, education and volunteering activities will no longer be counted in the participation limit. The travel time change will particularly assist carers who live in regional and remote areas and are more likely to need to travel further to work.

This months recipe: German Apple Tea Cake (super easy and delicious)
    Ingredients:
    125gr Butter
    90gr Sugar
    1 Cup SR flour (sifted)
    1 Egg
    Filling:
3 Cooking apples (peeled & sliced thin)
2tbs Sultanas (these can be left out if you don't like sultanas)
    1tbs Raw sugar
    1/2 tsp Cinnamon
    1/4tsp Nutmeg
1 Lemon Juiced (this can be left out if you don't like lemon)
    Method:
    Melt butter in large saucepan,
add sugar and stir until begins to dissolve,
    add flour and stir well,
    then beat in the egg.
Grease an 18cm cake tin and using your fingers, spread a little more than half the cake mixture over the bottom.
Place half of the apple slices over cake mixture, mix together sultanas, sugar & spices and sprinkle over apples.
Cover with remaining apple slices then sprinkle with lemon juice
In spoonfulls, spread the remaining cake mixture on top
Bake at 180 deg. for 45 minutes or until knife comes out clean.
Don't be fooled thinking there isn't enough cake mix because it really does come out perfectly.
The first time I made this we had it for a dessert with cream, the second time I doubled the ingredients and used a springform cake tin, both will come out great, if you want it for a dessert use the original recipe if you want a full tea cake then double up.

    Carers Corner - April 2024

Bealiba Railway Station - Central Goldfields
    From the Chair:

    Hello and welcome.
Well, Easter has come and gone, and so the year moves on.  We do hope you managed to have a lovely time with family and friends and allowed time for a bit of a rest.  Fortunately the weather was kind to us, being both warm and not too stormy, mind you, it was wonderful to receive some much needed rain to help put water in our tanks and dams.

Autumn is a lovely time of the year, with leaves changing colour, plants and trees are starting to prepare for the cold winter time ahead; so, do you think we should do the same for ourselves? That is, to enjoy the autumn beauty and warmth then begin to prepare ourselves for the winter months ahead by making sure our support systems are in place and ensuring everything is going well for you.

If you are linked with the NDIS, check the system, does that need to be sorted – or are you okay with things the way they are?  It is always wise to be making sure that your needs for yourself and your loved ones are working in your favour as you need them to; if not, seek out the help you need and check our support lists and NDIS updates for more information if needed.

Carers carry a huge burden in making sure family and loved ones are cared for, but we often forget ourselves. An afternoon spent with a carer support group can be a time of respite and to recharge yourself, so check if there is a support group near you; whether it be having a cuppa with a friend who understands your situation, or swapping information and having a laugh with fellow carers, the time spent is invaluable for your wellbeing. Also important is keeping up with the latest news and any new changes happening in the carer sector; this is what LMMHCN is about, it is important to us to keep you well informed of these changes.

Also, if you find any news you think we should know about please let us know and we will include it in our newsletter. Contact us at https://www.lmmhcn.org.au

Until next time, take care, and stay safe,
    Andrea

Loddon Mallee Mental Health & Wellbeing:
HealthConsult has been commissioned by the Loddon Mallee Interim Regional Body (LM IRB) to identify mental health priorities for the region that will focus the IRB's work to understand mental health and wellbeing needs issues and/or gaps across the region.
HealthConsult will conduct consultations with two key groups across the Loddon Mallee region. (1). Providers of mental health and wellbeing services. This could include GP's/primary care providers, allied health providers, alcohol and drug services, community health services, hospitals and ACCHO's (among others). (2). Consumers and community groups. This could include individual community members (with or without lived experience of mental health issues), carers of people with lived experience, community support and wellbeing groups (e.g. Neighbourhood Houses, Men's Sheds, Disaster Recovery Committees).
These consultations can be conducted face to face or virtually (depending on the preference of each individual group) and will ideally be attended by a member of the IRB so that IRB members can hear and respond to what communities and services are identifying as key issues.
These consultation meetings will be used to:

    • Build trust relationships with service providers.
    • Understand community participation processes and how the IRB can tap into these to respond to proactively support good mental health and wellbeing
    • Identify/confirm key mental health and wellbeing needs, and how they are similar or different across the region
    • Inform the priorities for the IRB work plan to help meet these needs
For service providers, HealthConsult are seeking to meet with service providers who have views about the points descibed above, and would like to provide input to the work plan of the LM IRB. Service provider consultations can occur virtually or face-to-face (subject to logistical travel arrangements.
For community groups, HealthConsult are hoping to identify and tap into existing meetings of community groups who are willing to dedicate part of their agenda/meeting time to helping understand community participation processes, mental health and wellbeing (MHW) needs, what is working well in terms of MHW, and what needs to be improved. These consultations would ideally be conducted face-to-face (subject to logistical/travel arrangements) but can also be conducted online via MS Teams.
For individuals/consumers/carers, HealthConsult are hoping to arrange one-on-one discussions to better understand experiences of accessing (or potentially, trying to access) MHW services, and perspectives on issues, gaps and what is working well. These consultations could occur face-to-face, by videoconference (MS Teams) or over the phone.

No names will be attributed to any quotes taken from the consultations and transcripts will not be distributed to external personnel without prior consent from all attendees. Transcripts will only be used for future reference in the project.
Please advise Alex Janssan (Consultant at HealthConsult, and project coordinator)) if you do not consent to your contributions being transcribed.
For further information please contact Alex Janssan: Email:   or phone: Mobile 0408 838 068 or

FLU, RSV and COVID cases are set to rise soon:
As the weather starts to cool, now is the time to start preparing for some unwanted house guests. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for everyone over 6 months of age. RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) infections are common and can be very disruptive, the virus can infect the lungs and breathing passages. RSV is so common partly because individuals lose their immunity relatively quickly. Reinfection can occur just two months after last last infection and normally surges around April to July in the Southern States. COVID 19 transmission is low at the moment but cases are expected to rise around the same time as influenza and RSV peaks. Last month the government updated its COVID 19 vaccination guidelines - 6 monthly boosters are now only recommended for those over the age of 75, please talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits to stay protected. We want everyone to be safe over winter.

NDIS Media Release 24th March 2024:
Minister Bill Shorten said "the era of ripping off disabled people is over".
A taskforce has been set up to crackdown on unfair price hikes for NDIS participants; this taskforce will put a stop to illegal overcharging as well as clamping down on misleading conduct, unfair contract terms and anti-competative agreements that might impact NDIS participants, while supporting the taskforce work.
Every NDIS participant, their carers, guardians, and nominees, will have received a letter explaining their rights and how to fight back against the NDIS 'wedding tax' where prices are increased just because someone is on the NDIS.
If you are concerned you are being overcharged, please email the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission at:  or call 1800 035 544
